Don Hilario de la Mata, Marqués de Vargas, founded distribution company Hilario de la Mata Representaciones S.L. in Madrid. It started its activity by distributing products from renowned winery Rioja Franco Española S.A. in the Spanish capital.
Taking advantage of Spain's nascent liberalisation during this period, an important portfolio of importation brands were added: Four Rouses Bourbon, Remy Martin, Drambuie, Mumm Cordon Rouge and Deward’s White Label.
The company acquired Bodega Viña Salceda and the portfolio of distributed brands continued to grow: Gin MG, Ron Bacardi, Diego Zamora, etc.
On the death of Don Hilario de La Mata, the next generation of the family, headed by Pelayo and José Manuel Mata, took control of Varma.
The diversification process was underway and Grupo Varma as it is known today was created: Alimentación Varma was established and the Bodegas del Marqués de Vargas were built in La Rioja.
The group experienced a period of intense growth thanks to involvement from Ron Barceló and Pazo de Valdomiño, the creation of the Conde de San Cristobal wineries, and the acquisition of the Pazo de San Mauro winery. Meanwhile, group companies continued to expand their portfolio with prestigious international brands: Cutty Sark, Glenfiddich, Hendrick's, Jack Daniel's, Disaronno, Moskovskaya and Stolichnaya.
